2006 Chevrolet HHR Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the shift cable on 2006 Chevrolet HHR?
A: Your first step before shifting the old cable should involve activating the parking brake followed by shifting into neutral position (N). First separate the console after which you must lift up the cable retainers. Prior to removing the Shift Cable ends disconnect them at the transmission shift levers and shift control assembly and keep track of their locations for subsequent assembly. The Shift Cable must be removed from the transmission cable bracket after which you can elevate the vehicle for support. The attachment nut from the underbody needs to be removed so the vehicle can be lowered. The driver's side front carpet must be placed aside while removing the left instrument panel closeout panel. The grommet can be separated from the Floor Pan before pulling the cable through the driver's floor opening to extract the cable fully from the vehicle. Begin cable assembly installation by passing it through the driver's floor opening before setting the grommet to meet the floor opening edge. Reinstall both the driver's side front carpet and left instrument panel closeout panel after completion. Fasten the Shift Cable attachment nut to the underbody before tightening it to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Next install the shift cables onto the transmission cable bracket while the vehicle remains at its lower height. Secure both ends of the Shift Cable to the transmission shift levers and the shift control assembly in the same positions where disassembly was performed. Press down on the shifter neutral lock clip while moving the shifter to position the lock correctly until the transmission reaches the neutral state. Press the locking tabs while pulling the shifter neutral lock clip to its proper original position before mounting the console.
