2006 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2006 Chevrolet HHR?
A: Start by raising and supporting your vehicle before taking off the left front tire. First remove the intermediate shaft to steering gear pinch bolt (N/A) before discarding it then disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Raise the vehicle then set the Steering Wheel into a straight-ahead position. The Steering Column needs to be locked because this process prevents sir system damage and malfunctions. Take out the ignition key while rotating the Steering Wheel to reach a locked position. Mark the intermediate shaft's connection to the Steering Column with scribe marks prior to its removal. After removing and discarding the Steering Column pinch bolt (N/A) you should pull the intermediate shaft off from the Steering Column shaft. A combination of pulling and squeezing and twisting actions unseats the intermediate shaft seal from the dash before extracting the intermediate shaft/seal from the vehicle. During new intermediate shaft installation use the previously marked points to guide the shaft position before inserting the assembly through the dash's front panel. The proper seating of the intermediate shaft seal requires visual inspection from the engine side followed by a push-and-squeeze-and-twist motion until full seating. Connect the intermediate shaft to the Steering Column shaft by aligning its pre-scribed mark to the Steering Column shaft's pre-scribed mark. Before reinstalling the intermediate shaft without scribed marks start by placing road wheels in straight ahead position. Install the shaft to the steering gear with bolt head towards lh wheel well then position the wheel straight ahead while connecting the shaft to the Steering Column shaft. Use a new intermediate shaft pinch bolt to bolt (N/A) the Steering Column while applying a torque of 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.), followed by connecting the shaft to the steering gear using a new bolt (N/A) that needs a torque setting of 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.). Put the left front wheel in place before double-checking Steering Wheel alignment. The intermediate shaft pinch bolt at the Steering Column needs removal when alignment becomes off. After disconnecting and rotating the intermediate shaft install it correctly and put in a new pinch bolt before tightening it to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.).
