Chevrolet HHR Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on Chevrolet HHR?
A: The first step to replace an intermediate Steering Shaft requires securing the Steering Wheel with a strap that locks the Steering Column to prevent sir system damage. The left front wheel assembly should be taken off before securing the Steering Wheel with a strap. Begin by detaching the intermediate Steering Shaft bolt connecting the steering gear. After maintaining and discarding this bolt you can disconnect the Steering Shaft from the steering gear while using scribe marks on the shaft throughout both sections for accurate alignment. Disconnect the Steering Column intermediate Steering Shaft bolt then discard it before separating the intermediate Steering Shaft from the Steering Column shaft and removing the intermediate Steering Shaft seal from the body pass-through. Extract the intermediate Steering Shaft assembly including the seal from your vehicle's system. When using a new intermediate Steering Shaft be sure to relocate the scratch marks before installing the assembly through the body pass-through while checking the seal placement from the engine side. Join the intermediate Steering Shaft to the Steering Column shaft by aligning both sets of scribed marks. Position fresh bolts at both the Steering Column and steering gear to apply 34 n.m torque (25 lb ft) before joining the intermediate Steering Shaft to its endpoints. The last step of the process includes reinstalling the remaining left front tire/wheel assembly.
