• Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2009 Chevrolet HHR?

  A: To replace the intermediate Steering Shaft, first, tie the Steering Wheel with a strap so that it cannot rotate, and the Steering Column is locked to avoid the damage of the sir system. Once you have secured the Steering Wheel, remove the left front tire and wheel assembly. Then, pull out the intermediate Steering Shaft bolt at the steering gear and unbolt the intermediate Steering Shaft from the steering gear with scribe marks set on both the intermediate Steering Shaft and the Steering Column shaft to ensure correct alignment. Then, withdraw the bolt from the intermediary Steering Shaft at the Steering Column and disconnect the intermedium Steering Shaft from the Steering Column shaft. Unscrew the intermediate Steering Shaft seal from the body pass-through and pull off the intermediate Steering Shaft and seal assembly from the car. Before installing the new intermediate Steering Shaft it is necessary to clean the threads of the bolts with the denatured alcohol and apply the corresponding general motors thread locker or blue, medium loctite(tm) 242 to the upper and lower intermediate Steering Shaft bolts. Transfer the previously made scribed marks if a new intermediate Steering Shaft is being used. Mount the intermediate Steering Shaft and seal assembly into the vehicle and make sure the intermediate Steering Shaft seal is seated correctly. Align the scribed marks sitting at intermediate Steering Shaft to that on Steering Column shaft and connect intermediate Steering Shaft to Steering Column into installing a new intermediate Steering Shaft bolt to the torque of 34nm (25 lbft). Next, connect the intermediate Steering Shaft to the gear then install another new bolt for the intermediate Steering Shaft and tighten it up to 34 nm (25 lb ft). Finally, replace the left front tire and wheel assembly.
