Chevrolet HHR Power Steering Assist Motor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Power Steering Assist Motor on Chevrolet HHR?
A: The first step when changing the power steering motor requires you to take out the Steering Column. The first step is to detach the tie strap from the power steering motor and disconnect its electrical cord. Position a cloth around the reduction unit followed by its installation into a vice with the reduction unit flange level and remove power steering motor bolts while removing the motor altogether. Wash away all grease from the reduction unit wormshaft space with a lint-free cotton cloth and equivalent products that must not contain solvents. When installing the power steering motor shaft you must apply the provided grease without using excessive amounts. The power steering motor should start smoothly but you should attempt another installation if it fails to start without coercion. Secure the power steering motor at its position then use three complete revolutions of the Steering Shaft to match the motor shaft direction to the reduction unit wormgear. You must prevent any forceful twisting motions to the motor while torquing bolts so alignment issues do not occur. The power steering motor bolts require torque of 18.5 nm (14 lb ft) and the electrical connector should be connected before installing a new tie strap followed by Steering Column reinstallation.
