2006 Chevrolet Malibu Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2006 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Replace the park/neutral position (PNP) switch by first engaging the parking brake followed by setting the control assembly to neutral while positioning the transaxle manual shaft to neutral. The j 41545 park/neutral switch aligner (J 41545) helps with switch installation. Start by removing the shift control cable that connects to the transaxle range switch lever before disconnecting electrical connectors from this switch and then unfastening the lever nut and removing the lever. First disconnect the transaxle range switch bolts before removing the switch. Install the old switch when the transaxle manual shaft sits in neutral after positioning the transaxle shift shaft flats against the transaxle range switch flats. Begin installing the transaxle range switch bolts loosely then drop in the j 41545 (J 41545) tool as illustrated before rotating until the tool finds its resting position. Secure both transaxle range switch bolts at 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) before you take out the alignment tool. First install the transaxle range switch lever then tighten its retaining nut to 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.). The modified switch requires checking for engine start-up capability only during park or neutral positions. Reroute the engine start sequence through the switch when it begins from positions other than park or neutral. End your work by installing shift control cable to transaxle range switch lever while checking for correct operation and finishing by connecting the transaxle range switch electrical connectors. New switch installation requires the same process but requires a neutral position on the transaxle manual shaft. Then set up the flats before tightening bolts to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) while performing this procedure in the order outlined earlier.
