Chevrolet Malibu Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Neutral Safety Switch for the 6T40/6T45 automatic transmission on Chevrolet Malibu?
    A:
Begin transmission position switch/sensor/for-6t40/6t45 automatic transmission repair by processing the control Valve Body removal. Start by using the dt-48550 (Detent Lever Pin Remover) to remove the manual shaft detent lever hub pin . Next follow with the removal of the manual shift shaft pin which is disposable. Separate the manual shaft from the transmission case while carefully disconnecting the actuator rod from the detent lever assembly but keeping the assembly on the case. The procedure requires manual shaft detent (w/shift position switch) lever assembly removal afterwards. The installation process begins with mating the detent lever assembly to the actuator rod before installing the manual shaft detent (w/shift position switch) lever assembly. Automatic transmission fluid should be applied to protect the manual shift shaft seal during shaft installation. Insert the manual shaft before using the dt-48550 tool to position the detent lever hub pin at 7.9 mm (0.38 in) height. Install the new manual shift shaft pin using the j 41229 (Manual Shaft Pin Installer) until it reaches a height between 7.2-8.2 mm (0.28-0.32 in) to achieve proper shaft engagement. Install the control Valve Body followed by a service fast learn adapt procedure.
  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on Chevrolet Malibu?
    A:
To replace the pnp switch, the first step is disconnecting the switch electrical connector while removing the attaching bolts and the park/neutral position switch assembly. For installation, set the shift shaft to the park/neutral position, and line up the flats on the shift shaft with those on park/neutral switch. Mount the park/neutral position switch mounting bolts and tighten them to 24 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Connect the switch electrical connector while the engine starts only in p (Park) or n (Neutral); the previous step does not make any sense - if exercises are performed an abnormal way, the switch will have to be set in multiple positions which can cause improper training. The exercises should be readjusted to have everything right. Next, align the transmission control shifter assembly into the n (Neutral) notch in the detent plate, loosen attaching bolts for the park/neutral position switch and rotate the switch onto the shifter assembly to position the service adjustment pacing the cast hole with the carrier tang hole. Insert a 2.34mm (3/32 inch) maximum diameter gauge pin to a depth of 9.0mm (9/64 inch) and tighten the bolts to 24 nm (18 ft. Lbs.).
