  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2004 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Before starting pnp switch replacement work make sure to apply the parking brake while keeping the control assembly in neutral and the transaxle manual shaft in neutral position. Start by taking out the shift control cable from the transaxle range switch lever before disconnecting electrical connectors from the transaxle range switch. Begin by taking away the transaxle range switch lever nut and lever before removing the switch bolts from the transaxle range switch position. When installing an outdated switch position your transaxle manual shaft at neutral while properly aligning the switch flats with those on the transaxle shift shaft. Place a soft touch on the transaxle range switch bolts before using a park/neutral switch aligner (J 41545) to position the switch properly. Fit the alignment tool before fastening the transaxle range switch bolts to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Remove the tool afterward to install the transaxle range switch lever and nut with 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.) torque. Perform the switch adjustment until the engine starts exclusively when the transmission is in park or neutral position. Check the switch position only when the engine begins to start in any position other than park or neutral. Connect the transaxle range switch electric connections before installing the shift control cable to it's mounting point on the lever to accomplish proper operation. To install a new switch follow the same starting sequence by maintaining the transaxle manual shaft in neutral position before aligning the flats and tightening bolts to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) then installing the lever with nut before checking engine operation limited to park or neutral after adjustment completes.
