2001 Chevrolet Malibu Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2001 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Start by disconnecting the electrical connector from the pnp switch then use a suitable tool to remove both the mounting bolts in conjunction with the park/neutral position switch assembly. The installation process starts by setting the shift shaft to n (Neutral) and lining up its flats with those of the park/neutral switch. Screw the park/neutral position switch mounting bolts into position until they reach 24 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque. Connect the switch electrical connector, ensuring the engine starts only in p (Park) or n (Neutral); adjust the switch until it starts in the correct position. The transmission control shifter assembly should be positioned into the n (Neutral) notch of the detent plate while you loosen the park/neutral position switch attaching bolts. Rotate the switch on the assembly until it lines up the service adjustment hole with the carrier tang hole. Insert a 2.34 mm diameter gauge pin measuring up to 3/32 inch into the hole to a depth of 9.0 mm (9/64 inch) then tighten the bolts to 24 nm torque setting (18 ft. Lbs.).
