2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the rear brake calipers on 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: For safe brake caliper overhaul you need to remove the unit while watching out for blowing air pressure to avoid fingers near the pistons which could pop out forcibly and harm you. Insert clean pads inside the caliper before you blow out the pistons through the fluid intake hole with low air pressure. You must first remove the caliper housing retaining ring before taking out the dust boot piston seal. A small wooden or plastic tool can help you remove and throw away the piston seal from the caliper opening. Use denatured alcohol to clean all surfaces of the Brake Caliper Piston bore, seal counterbore, and caliper piston but exclude abrasive materials. After cleaning the caliper bore with air filter and non-lubricated air blow-dry the parts. Inspect for detrimental factors such as cracks, scoring, rust, and corrosion; if only minimal rust exists attempt to smooth it by sanding but replace components if issues persist. Replace the entire caliper unit when you discover damage on its piston. Put delco supreme 11(R) brake fluid gm p/n 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667) or equivalent from a sealed container onto the new piston seal then insert it into the caliper bore. Place thin layers of brake fluid onto caliper piston top before inserting its lower part into the bore. Push the new piston dust boot seal over the caliper piston while pressing the piston all the way down to make sure the seal hollows out properly in the caliper counterbore. Place the retaining ring on the dust boot then put on the bleeder valve and cap before securing the valve. Finally fit the caliper back to its place.
