2006 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on 2006 Chevrolet SSR?
A: You need to lock down the steering wheel and ensure straight driving wheels before dismantling steering components because improper orientation may result in sir coil damage. The Ignition Switch needs to be set to "lock" and the key needs to come out. Follow these steps to lock the Steering Column: insert the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) through the lower trim cover's access hole. Lift the vehicle before you unfasten and remove the lower-to-upper pinch bolt and disconnect the lower Steering Shaft from its upper position. Before installing note how the intermediate shaft aligns between the power steering gear and the Steering Column for future reference. Follow these steps to disconnect the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear: remove the lower intermediate shaft to power steering gear input shaft pinch bolt then rack the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear. Secure the new lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear by using the input shaft pinch bolt while tightening it to a torque of 40 nm (29 ft. Lbs.). Then attach the lower intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft before installing its pinch bolt with a torque of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Before raising the vehicle lower it then remove the Steering Column lock pin (J42640).
