2005 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on 2005 Chevrolet SSR?
A: To replace the lower intermediate Steering Shaft, ensure the wheels at the front are squared and the Steering Column is in the lock position to avoid wrong alignment and potential damage to sir coil assembly. Start by turning the Steering Wheel to put the front wheels in the right direction, turn the Ignition Switch to the lock position, and take out the key. Apply the Steering Column lock pin (J 42640) to lock the Steering Column, through the access opening of the lower Steering Column trim cover. Now, raise and support the vehicle and remove the lower intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt followed by releasing the lower intermediate shaft from the upper intermediate shaft and note the relationship of the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear and Steering Column for proper installation. To exclude the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear input shaft pinch bolt, disconnect a lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear before separating the lower intermediate shaft from the vehicle. For installation, put in the vehicle the lower intermediate shaft and connect it to the power steering gear, with adherence to the fastener notice in service precautions. Install the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear in put shaft pinch bolt and tighten it to 40 nm (29 ft. Lbs) and connect this to the upper intermediate shaft and install pinch bolt to the upper intermediate shaft and tighten it to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Lastly, lower the vehicle, and unlock the Steering Column by removing the Steering Column lock pin (J 42640) from the access hole.
