2006 GMC Savana 3500 Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on the 4L60-E/4L65-E/4L70-E automatic transmission on 2006 GMC Savana 3500?
A: The first step to replace the park/neutral position switch in 4l60-e/4l65-e/4l70-e automatic transmissions requires to apply your parking brake and put the gear selector into the neutral position. Start by jacking up the vehicle then unfasten the nut holding the transmission control lever to the manual shaft and finish by removing both components. Use a wrench to remove the electrical connectors before using a socket wrench to remove the bolts which secure the park/neutral position switch to the transmission. Pull the switch free from manual shaft engagement. Carefully file away possible burrs on the manual shaft's outer surface using a file tool when the switch proves difficult to remove. Install the switch by placing the hub flat sections of the device against manual shaft flat sections and pull the switch onto the shaft until the mounting bracket reaches the transmission bosses. A new switch package includes a positive assurance bracket which eliminates the requirement for the neutral position adjustment tool. First clamp down two transmission bolts loosely and then slot the neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A) onto the switch. Ensure the tool slots match up with its tabs before proceeding. Turn the tool to position the upper locator pin into alignment with the switch slot before tightening bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Next remove the tool along with any positive assurance bracket that was installed. Connect the electrical connectors to the switch before reattaching the transmission control lever using its nut while torqueing to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). After lowering the vehicle verify that the switch functions correctly while limiting operation to the p (Park) and n (Neutral) positions. Check for switch replacement if it fails to work properly.
