2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Engine Control Module Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Engine Control Module on 2006 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: A proper replacement of the powertrain control module should only begin after turning off the Ignition Switch to protect its internal components. Both pcm connector surfaces require clearing from debris whileemaker should check for correct gasket position to guard against contaminant entry. The new pcm requires reprogramming as its first step. The first step should involve using a scan tool to obtain and document engine oil life percentage for proper programming because failure to program locks the engine oil life at 100% which triggers an oil change after 5000 km (3,000 mi). The pcm cover must be unbolted from its brackets before disconnecting the Battery Cable. Titrate the two bolts on the pcm electrical connector while maintaining off ignition status during this operation. First disconnect the pcm electrical connectors as well as release the spring latch to remove the pcm by unhooking its mounting tabs. When installing the new pcm the user needs to first connect all electrical connectors followed by locking the spring latch and securing all mounting tabs. Securing the two pcm connector bolts to 8 newton meters with 71 pound inches torque will complete the installation of the cover. Then, engage the tabs on the pcm cover before performing any required pcm programming if a new unit was installed.
