2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What tools are required to replace the timing chain, sprockets, or tensioner on 2006 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: Three tools are necessary for Timing Chain and sprocket and tensioner replacement: to replace Timing Chain components you need both rear pinion bearing race installer (J 5590) and Crankshaft gear remover (J 5825-A). Rear pinion bearing race installer (J 5590) and Crankshaft gear remover (J 5825-A). Place a 7/16-20 x 1 inch bolt into the Crankshaft end for rotating purposes after removing the Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor reluctor ring. Using the bolt inserted into the Crankshaft and the pinion bearing race tool rotate the Crankshaft until the timing marks align while the number 4 cylinder position reaches top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke. The removal process starts by snapping off the Timing Chain tensioner shoe from its pin. After that, you should remove the camshaft sprocket bolts to take out both the sprocket and Timing Chain together. To perform the task start with the Crankshaft gear remover (J 5825-A) while using an open-end wrench to remove the Crankshaft sprocket and finally the Crankshaft balancer key. First clean the Timing Chain sprockets before conducting an inspection. Remove the Timing Chain tensioner bracket bolt and bracket when needed. Installation requires the Timing Chain tensioner bracket's bolt to be tightened to 12 nm or 106 inch lbs. Drop the key into the Crankshaft keyway while maintaining parallel alignment or a slight inclination and position the Crankshaft sprocket's keyway directly against the Crankshaft balancer key. Use the rear pinion bearing race installer (J 5590) to set the Crankshaft sprocket before fitting the camshaft sprocket together with its Timing Chain. Position this chain around the Crankshaft sprocket while placing it on the driver's side. Adjust the camshaft sprocket's alignment mark to face the 6 o'clock position. Secure the Timing Chain tensioner shoe onto the bracket by placing its top edge under the tab at the bracket's summit. For proper installation place the camshaft Timing Chain sprocket into the Timing Chain so the marks on the sprocket line up with the camshaft timing marks. Using a hammer on the camshaft sprocket installation could remove the expansion cup plugin. Fasten the camshaft sprocket bolts using a torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) so the Crankshaft sprocket faces the 12 o'clock mark while the camshaft sprocket shows the 6 o'clock mark. Insert the sensor reluctor ring into the Crankshaft's end after removing its bolt.
