• Q: How to replace the RH Differential Cover and seal on 2007 Cadillac XLR?

  A: A toolkit is required for Differential carrier cover and seal replacement on the right side which includes dt-47596 bearing cup remover (DT-47596) and j 42168-16 spacers (J 42168-16) and j 42170 bearing and race installer (J 42170) and j 45124 removal bridge (J 45124) and j 46405 output shaft seal installer (J 46405). The toolset for Differential carrier cover and seal replacement includes dt-47596 bearing cup remover (DT-47596) along with j 42168-16 spacers (J 42168-16), j 42170 bearing and race installer (J 42170), j 45124 removal bridge (J 45124), and j 46405 output shaft seal installer (J 46405). First uninstall the right rear wheel drive shaft together with the right rear Muffler assembly before draining Differential fluid. First support the Differential assembly before you remove the right Differential mount then its retaining bolts and dowel pin to remove the Differential cover. Place the dt-47596 into the right cover's bearing cup before tightly fastening it. Position the j 45124 above the dt-47596 before adjusting the legs to find the correct fit. Install the supplied bolt, nut thrust, and washer to tighten the nut which will remove the bearing cup and shim. Assemble the shim by marking it for future installation. Using a vernier caliper, straight edge, and j 42168-16 document the new Differential cover bore dimension as value a. After measuring the old Differential cover bore dimension as value b, calculate the Differential between these two measurements which becomes the value for shim addition or subtraction. The technician must calculate shim size adjustments by measuring the value obtained through subtraction between the two bore dimensions. Positive values signal the addition of specified shims to the existing stack while negative amounts indicate the removal of a matching number of shims. The selected shims together with bearing race should be installed into the new cover by using j 42170 with a hydraulic press for pressing. Both the Differential cover and its housing require cleaning of their o-ring sealing surfaces where you must install a fresh o-ring onto the cover before restoring the cover in place. Set the factory-specified torque of 28 n.m (20 lb ft) when fastening both the dowel pin and the retaining bolts of the Differential cover. Use j 46405 to put the axle seal into the Differential cover before adding the proper fluid into the Differential and reinstalling the right rear Muffler and wheel drive shaft.
