• Q: How to replace the RH Differential Cover and seal on 2008 Cadillac XLR?

  A: To replace the Differential carrier cover and seal on the right, the first thing to remove is right rear wheel drive shaft, followed by the right rear Muffler assembly. Drain the Differential fluid and support the Differential assembly. Next, take off the right Differential mount, the retaining bolts, and push out the dowel pin before attaching the end of the keeper plate. Take out the Differential cover as well. Pool the axle seal (1,4), first introduce the dt-47596 bearing cup remover (DT-47596) into the right cover; tighten it securely into the bearing cup. Put the j 45124 removal bridge (J 45124) over the dt-47596, and set up the following two legs at an appropriate position, and then install the supplied bolt, nut thrust, and washer tightened the nut while holding the bolt to take out the bearing cup and shim. Mark or tag the shim for assembling. Take a dimension of a new Differential cover bore with the help of a vernier caliper , a straight edge , and j 42168-16 spacers (J 42168-16), write down this as figure a , and take dimension of the old Differential cover bore in the manner mention earlier, write it down as figure b, take figure b, and subtract figure a from it. Add the value in shims to the existing shims if the value is positive; and if the value is negative, decrease the existing shims pack by this value. Mount the chosen shims and the chosen race of the bearing into the new cover, pressing them in by means of the j 42170 bearing and race installer (J 42170) and a hydraulic press. Clean and the sealing surface of the o-ring on the cover of turnover Differential and also on the outside of the Differential housing, then set a new o-ring to the cover of the turnover Differential. Mount the Differential cover onto the solitary pin, and onto the dowel pin and Differential cover retaining bolts tightening to 28 n.m (20 lb ft). Install the axle seal into the Differential cover using the j 46405 output shaft seal installer(J 46405), fill the rear axle Differential with the proper fluid and level, and reinstall the right rear Muffler and the right rear wheel drive shaft.
