2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What Tools Are Required to Service and Repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder on 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Tools needed in order to service and repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder: lock cylinder staking tool (BO-47869). Start by grasping the uncoded cylinder plug with sidebar slot on the left side and the top having the three springholes. Put one tumbler spring in each of the three tumbler spring hole. Load the first tumbler at key cut position number 5 by measuring the cut depth and inserting the selected tumbler to the second slot from the front of the cylinder plug. The same procedure is repeated on key cut positions 7 and 9, so that all the tumblers are flush to the outside diameter of the cylinder plug with the correct key in position. Rotate the cylinder plug to the right side - remove the key where it is placed and replace two tumbler springs from the 4 tumbler spring holes with appropriately labeled springs. Load the first tumbler at key cut position no 4 and insert the remaining tumblers in slots for key cut positions 6, 8, and 10 checking for correct load as well. Lubricate the tumbler surfaces lightly and insert u-shaped plunger shaft into the grooves on the right side of the cylinder plug. Insert the cylinder plug assembly into the cylinder sleeve assembly, making sure it is fully seated. Then place the actuator into the pocket at the front side of the cylinder plug, and fasten the security plate on the top securely. Stake the security plate into the cylinder sleeve assembly using the tool lock cylinder staking tool (BO-47869) while rotating forcing screw to stake the material over plate tightening to 23-28n.m 17-21 lb ft. Check that the actuator rotates freely after staking. Install and stake the cover onto the head of the cylinder sleeve assembly by crimping it in four places. Insert the sidebar and the two sidebar springs into the cylinder sleeve assembly, and attach the stake and the two sidebar spring retainers by crimping the material into the retainers. Finally, put the matching key into the cylinder assembly to confirm that the sidebar extends flush with the outer diameter when the key is inserted and pulls out when it exits the opening, making the plunger flush or almost flush with the rear of the cylinder sleeve. Mount the ignition cylinder assembly into the Steering Column of the vehicle.
