2007 Chevrolet HHR Brake Light Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace and Adjust a Brake Light Switch on 2007 Chevrolet HHR?
A: Starting the stop lamp switch replacement requires first removing the sound insulator from the system. Start by rotating the stop lamp switch counter-clockwise and separating it from the retainer. You can remove the switch retainer from its position on the pedal bracket. Reinstall the stop lamp switch retainer on the Brake Pedal bracket with indexing arrow facing upward if you removed it during the replacement process. Connect the electrical connector to the stop lamp switch before pulling the Brake Pedal toward you to verify full release of the system. After securing the Brake Pedal maintain pressure on it for stop lamp switch installation and adjustment: if a new Brake Pedal assembly is being installed, it will have a stop lamp switch adjustment spacer over the switch contact rubber bumper; new Brake Pedal assemblies will have a stop lamp switch adjustment spacer used on the switch contact rubber bumper; existing pedal assemblies need a 2 mm (5/64 in) drill bit or hex wrench placed below the switch contact rubber bumper during installation. The stop lamp switch must enter the retainer with full plunger depression against its adjustment spacer or drill bit or hex wrench while avoiding any movement of the bracket or switch contact arm on the Brake Pedal. Proceed with a clockwise rotation of the switch to lock into the retainer position before you can take off the adjustment spacer along with the drill bit or hex wrench. Check the switch contact rubber bumper clearance for the switch barrel by releasing the Brake Pedal as the clearance should not exceed 1.2 mm (0.047 in). The cruise control release switch and stop lamp and torque converter clutch (TCC) switch must open within a distance of 25.4 mm (1 in) of pedal travel and activate at the same time or earlier than actual braking action. The Brake Pedal can reach a distance of 25.4 mm (1 in) before the cruise control system disconnects. Finally, reinstall the sound insulator.
