2008 Buick Enclave CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear CV Boot and CV Joint on the drive shaft inner joint on 2008 Buick Enclave?
A: Although wheel drive shaft inner joint and boot replacement vary according to the vehicles make and model, these are most commonly used. They include: Drive Axle Seal Clamp-Pliers (J 35566), Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572). First, with the help of the side cutters, pinch off the small pimp seal clamp from the wheel drive shaft bar and discard it, passing on the risk of cutting into the wheel drive shaft trilobal tripot bushing. Next, pull out the large seal clamp from the tripot joint by using side cutters and dispose it out as well. Detach the wheel drive shaft inboard seal from the trilobal tripot bushing and slide the seal back from the joint along the wheel drive shaft bar. Eliminate the housing from the tripot joint spider and the wheel drive shaft bar, then the guide from the spring and the spring from the tripot housing. Prior to disassembly, indicate the tripot spider position on the wheel drive shaft bar to maintain the correct 60-degree offset relationship between the inner and the outer tripot spiders. Next, tap around the tripot spider face with brass drift and hammer with caution to compress the barrel retaining ring fitted to the wheel drive shaft bar and thereafter tripot spider vanishes and get rid of the barrel retaining ring. Check the wheel drive shaft inboard seal, tripot joint spider assembly, housing as well as trilobal tripot bushing for damage or wear. To assemble, put the new small seal clamp on small end of the joint seal and slide both on the shaft bar of the wheel drive with the small end of the joint seal into the joint seal groove. Using the Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572), crimp the small seal retaining clamp to a torque of 136 N.m (100 lb ft). Mount A new barrel retaining ring to the wheel drive shaft bar with an amost 60 degrees offset relationship. Have the reference mark on the tripot spider align with the wheel drive shaft bar so that the beveled edge of tri-pot spider faces the wheel drive shaft bar when reassembling. Install the tripot spider, while compressing the barrel retaining ring with a flat-bladed tool, then affirm engagement by trying to pull the tripot spider from the wheel drive shaft bar. Make sure that the trilobal tripot bushing is even with the housing, then fill it with grease from the service kit with about half and use the other half to pack the housing. Mount the spring to the tripot housing using its own grease, and then the guide to the spring. Mount the trilobal tripot bushing to the housing, mount the new, larger seal retaining clamp to the interior of the internal seal on the wheel drive shaft, and slide the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly onto the spool of the wheel drive shaft bar. Check to make sure the large diameter of the wheel drive shaft inboard seal is in the groove, inspect the seal to ascertain it is in proper shape and adjust if required. Next, align the wheel drive shaft inboard seal, tripot housing, and large seal retaining clamp by latching then using the Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) to latch the large seal retaining clamp with the latching tangs completely engaged. Twist the inner tripot cover 4 or 5 times to spread the grease for the tripot spider bearings.
