2008 Buick Enclave Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace a CV Boot and CV Joint on a Rear Wheel Drive Shaft for Inner on 2008 Buick Enclave?
A: You need two specific tools for replacing the rear wheel drive shaft inner joint and boot: Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) and Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572) constitute essential tools for this replacement task. Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) and Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572). Begin by cutting the small clamp from the wheel drive shaft bar while protecting the wheel drive shaft trilobal tripot bushing with side cutters then dispose of the clamp. Utilize side cutters to take away the large tripot seal clamp from the joint then discard both clamps. To uncover the wheel drive shaft inboard seal you must separate it from the trilobal tripot bushing while moving the seal down the wheel drive shaft bar. First remove the housing from the tripot joint spider and the wheel drive shaft bar and next remove the guide and spring from the tripot housing. Mark the position of the tripot spider on the drive shaft bar to preserve its perfect 60-degree offset between inner and outer spiders. With a brass drift and hammer, gently strike the tripot spider face to compress the barrel retaining ring on the wheel drive shaft bar. Later, remove the retaining ring and tripot spider. Examine the wheel drive shaft inboard seal together with the tripot joint spider assembly, housing while checking the trilobal tripot bushing for both wear and damage conditions. Assembly requires inserting the new small seal clamp onto the joint seal's small end followed by attaching both components onto the wheel drive shaft bar until the small end of the joint seal fits into the joint seal groove. Crank the small seal retaining clamp using Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572) until it reaches 136 N.m (100 lb ft) torque. Position a fresh barrel retaining ring to the wheel drive shaft bar while keeping the 60-degree rotational relationship in proper alignment. A proper alignment must be achieved between the reference mark on the tripot spider and wheel drive shaft bar such that the spider's beveled edge faces toward the shaft during final installation. Squeeze the barrel retaining ring using a flat-bladed tool while installing the tripot spider to the wheel drive shaft bar. Check for proper engagement by attempting to pull the tripot spider away from the wheel drive shaft bar. Place half of the service kit grease into the wheel drive shaft inboard seal before moving on to repack the housing with the remaining grease. Place the spring within the tripot housing after applying grease from the housing then install the guide onto the spring. Place the trilobal tripot bushing into the housing before fitting the larger new seal retaining clamp onto the wheel drive shaft inboard seal. Then slide the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly on the wheel drive shaft bar. The large diameter wheel drive shaft inboard seal needs to pass through its larger clamp onto the trilobal tripot bushing while positioning its lip into the correct groove. Verify that the seal remains undamaged. Check the seal's shape then modify it if needed for the correct fit. Position the joint components to their correct vehicle position while ensuring alignment between the wheel drive shaft inboard seal , tripot housing and large seal retaining clamp before latching. The Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) enables team members to attach the large seal retaining clamp following full engagement of the latching tangs inside the large seal clamp band. After this they spin the inner tripot housing four or five times to properly distribute grease through the tripot spider bearings.
