- Q: How to replace the front drive shaft on 2008 Cadillac SRX?A: Vehicle support and elevation must happen in the first step to replace the front propeller shaft. Begin the front propeller shaft replacement by removing the propeller shield and making notes which show the CV Joint's location between the Transfer Case and propeller shaft. First remove the propeller shaft CV Joint-to-differential flange bolts then place a flat-bladed tool into the notch located on the differential flange. After putting the propeller shaft behind the vehicle gently you can separate the CV Joint from the differential pinion flange so you can remove the CV Joint-to-Transfer Case flange bolts. Use a flat-bladed tool to enter the Transfer Case flange notch and guide the frontward movement of the propeller shaft to loosen its connection. Check for propeller shaft rotational movement in between the CV Joint and tube. Also look for grease leakage along with damage to the cv joints and their seals. And confirm that cv joints are not bound during this inspection because any issues discovered require replacement of the front propeller shaft. The CV Joint should be inserted into the Transfer Case flange with its coned end before attaching the propeller shaft to the Transfer Case and differential flanges. First thoroughly clean the propeller shaft-to-flange threads before applying thread locker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) which requires curing time of 10 minutes. Use crescent washers when installing CV Joint-to-differential flange bolts while torquing them to 40 n.m (29 lb ft) following the sequence. Proceed with the same installation procedure for the CV Joint-to-Transfer Case flange bolts. Proceed to reattach the propeller shaft heat shield while checking for any joint rotation between the CV Joint and propeller shaft tube. Complete the installation by lowering the vehicle.
