2008 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Automatic Transmission Filter and seal on 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: The replacement procedure for automatic transmission fluid filter and seal begins with vehicle elevation and support. A drain pan should sit beneath the transaxle Oil Pan during the operation. Touching the Oil Pan bolts during removal requires caution because Oil Pan surface damage will lead to fluid leakage. The front-side bolts of the Oil Pan should be completely removed but leave the rear bolts with 4 turns of loosening as the maximum. Using a rubber mallet or light prying motion on the Oil Pan allows fluid drainage before checking the fluid color. After slowly removing the existing Oil Pan bolts you can take out the Oil Pan together with its gasket. A long screwdriver should be used to gently remove the oil filter neck from its seal before examining the condition of the oil filter seal and its components. To remove the seal use the j 6125-1b (J 6125-1B Slide Hammer) together with j 23129 (J 23129 Axle Boot Remover). Before installing the new seal you should apply either j 36850 (J 36850) or petroleum jelly as a coating on it. Begin by inserting a new filter into the case then secure the Oil Pan Gasket using a new gasket only when the sealing ribs are damaged. The technician thoroughly cleans and dries the Oil Pan before checking for damage to find new parts when needed then installs the pan. The Oil Pan bolts should be tightened to 10 n.m (89 lb in) before lowering the vehicle and proper fluid level should be achieved. After leakage testing of the pan you should verify the transmission fluid quantity.
