2008 Chevrolet Cobalt Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the shift cable in a Getrag 5 Speed manual transmission on 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: You must first activate the parking brake and set the transmission to n (neutral) position when changing a getrag 5 speed manual transmission Shift Cable. Begin by removing the console and next lift the cable retainers before disconnecting the cable ends from both the shift control assembly and transmission shift levers while keeping track of their positions for later reinstallation. The Shift Cable removal starts by removing the cable from the transmission cable bracket while hoisting and supporting the vehicle until it is time to detach the underbody nut before lowering. The grommet must be separated from the Floor Pan by moving the left instrument panel closeout panel and positioning driver's side front carpet to the side. Use floor opening access to pull the cable out from the vehicle's driver compartment. Seam the cable assembly through the driver's floor opening before installing the grommet until it rests against the floor opening. You must reinstall the driver's side front carpet followed by the left instrument panel closeout panel before raising the vehicle. Begin by installing the Shift Cable attachment nut on the underbody then tighten it to 10 n.m (89 lb in), next lower the vehicle then link the shift cables to the transmission cable bracket. Reattach the Shift Cable ends to the transmission shift levers as well as the shift control assembly according to the disassembly procedure. Use a finger to push the shifter neutral lock clip while moving the shifter to position the lock clip in the center. Check that the transmission is in neutral position before pressing down on the locking tabs for reinstallation of the console.
