2009 Chevrolet Cobalt Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace a Shift Cable in a Manual Transmission on 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: The first step to replace the manual transmission shift control cable involves applying the parking brake while shifting into 4th gear. First remove the console and lift the cable retainers before disconnecting the ends of the cable from the shift control assembly while keeping track of their positions for subsequent reinstallation. First disconnect the cable ends from transmission shift levers before taking off the Shift Cable from the transmission cable bracket and supporting the vehicle. Lowering the vehicle requires unfastening the Shift Cable attachment nut from underbody space. Start by taking out the left instrument panel closeout panel and carefully move the driver-side front carpet to the side. The grommet needs to be detached from the Floor Pan while the cable needs to be pulled through the driver's floor opening for removal. The cable assembly needs to pass through the driver's floor opening and the grommet should be installed flush with the floor surface. Raising the vehicle allows you to reinstall the driver's side front carpet after which you should place back the left instrument panel closeout panel. The underbody mount should receive the Shift Cable attachment nut which needs torquing to 10 nm (89 lb in) before lowering the vehicle. The shift cables need installation onto the transmission cable bracket followed by attachment of Shift Cable ends to transmission shift levers as documented during disassembly while joining the Shift Cable to the shift control assembly. You must exercise caution when freeing the 4th gear locking tab through shifting ring up-pulls combined with locking plier compression of the tabs. Start by engaging the 4th gear locking tab of the shift control assembly housing but keep the transmission in 4th gear while pressing down on cable retainers before pulling the shifter 4th gear lock clip back then installing the console.
