2008 Chevrolet HHR Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace a Shift Cable in a Manual Transaxle on 2008 Chevrolet HHR?
A: The replacement process starts with applying the parking brake and putting the transmission in 4th gear position. First remove the console then raise the cable retainers before disconnecting cable ends from the shift control assembly while keeping track of their positions for future put back. First detach the cable ends from the transmission shift levers before taking out the Shift Cable from the transmission cable bracket and support the vehicle in the air. Lower the vehicle only when you have removed the Shift Cable attachment nut from the underbody section. Take out the left instrument panel insulator while placing it aside with the driver's side front carpet. Separate the grommet from the Floor Pan and extract the cable through the driver floor opening to remove it. To install the cable assembly first push it through the driver's floor opening before placing the grommet flush with the opening then reinstall both the driver's side front carpet and left instrument panel insulator. Synchronize the Shift Cable attachment nut installation under the vehicle before tightening it to 10 n.m (89 lb in). Install the shift cables onto the transmission cable bracket before joining their ends to transmission shift levers through reference points from disassembly. Connect the Shift Cable to the shift control assembly while releasing the 4th gear locking tab through shifter ring pullup followed by locking plier compression of the tabs. Conclude the shift control assembly housing 4th gear locking tab then position the transmission in fourth gear before pressing down cable retainers and restoring the shifter 4th gear lock clip to its original position followed by console installation.
