2008 Chevrolet Impala Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Clutch assembly on 2008 Chevrolet Impala?
A: Begin by gathering these replacement tools for the compressor clutch assembly work: compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872) snap ring pliers (J 6083) and m6x1.0 tap. You need three tools: compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872) along with snap ring pliers (J 6083) along with m6x1.0 tap for this job. Start by replacing the adjustable dowels inside the compressor clutch holding tool j 37872 with three 5/16 x 1 inch bolts. The compressor clutch plate bolt should be discarded first and the compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872) should be used to maintain the compressor clutch plate position before removal of the part. Use snap ring pliers (J 6083) to extract the compresssor pulley snap ring before removing the compressor pulley itself. Remove the compressor clutch coil snap ring by using snap ring pliers (J 6083) followed by extracting the compressor clutch coil. Use the m6x1.0 tap to clean clutch plate bolt threads and clean each thread with compressed air. Use snap ring pliers (J 6083) to install the compressor clutch coil snap ring after the installation of the compressor clutch coil. Use snap ring pliers (J 6083) to reinstall the compressor pulley together with its snap ring. Place the 0.4 mm (0.016 in) air gap shim into the clutch drive plate before installing it with compressor clutch plate after applying a small amount of oil. Perform a rotation check on the drive plate to make sure it does not contact the pulley before measuring the air gap and adding shims to reach a 0.3 to 0.6 mm (0.012 to 0.024 in) air gap range. Use the compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872) to stop the clutch plate from turning and tighten the new clutch drive plate bolt with colored adhesive on at least 5 threads to 12 n.m (106 lb in). Reinstall the compressor unit followed by a leak test on all fittings through the use of the leak test tool (J 39400-A).
