2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rocker Shaft Spring Kit and valve stem oil seal on 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: To do the job you need to take out the required valve rocker arms and spark plugs. Use the j 22794 (Spark Plug Port Adapter) to insert into the Spark Plug hole while connecting a shop air hose for compressed air that retains the valves in position. Reinstall the Rocker Arm for the spring to be removed while placing a flat washer onto the bolt. Take care when using the j 5892-d (Valve Spring Compressor) because of its high-tension work. Put the slotted tool end under the Rocker Arm bolt washer and steadily apply pressure to make the valve keys accessible. The j 38606 valve spring compressor works as an alternative when the j 5892-d does not match. Position its jaws completely around the valve spring to defend against scratches. Release valve spring pressure while taking off the valve keys at the same time with j 5892-d or j 38606. Unlock the valve spring cap then take out the valve spring before removing the Valve Stem Oil Seal. Deploy the j 42073 tool to set the Valve Stem Oil Seal against the valve guide. Then seal the valve guide with clean engine oil and install the oil seal onto the valve guide using j 42073. I put back the valve spring and valve spring cap before compressing the valve spring on demand using j 5892-d or j 38606. Apply grease to the valve stem keys and position them correctly before letting the valve spring pressure off slowly. End the valve shims and use them to check that the valve stem keys are set correctly. Afterward install the j 22794 tool and put back the spark plugs and valve rocker arms.
