2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: To replace the engine front cover, get rid of the Water Pump, crankshaft balancer, and Oil Pan. Next remove the engine shield bolts and shield and remove the engine wire harness clip at the front cover. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector, the ckp sensor bolt and sensor, and discard the ckp sensor o-ring seal. Loosen the bolt and slide off the cmp sensor and wire harness jumper from the engine front cover. Remove the cmp sensor from the wiring harness jumper and disconnect the cmp sensor wiring harness jumper. Now remove the front cover bolts and store the front cover up, having all the sealing surfaces cleaned up before installing a new front cover. Install the front cover bolts, tighten to 12 n.m (106 lb in), and do not be reusing the original o-ring seal. In case one has to reinstall the old cmp sensor, a new o-ring seal should be put on the sensor and then cmp sensor should be attached to the wiring harness jumper and then heated with clean engine oil before the cmp sensor and wiring harness jumper are attached to the engine front cover. After that, tighten the cmp sensor bolt down to 10 n.m (89 lb in) and join the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the cmp sensor wiring harness jumper. Do not reclaim the original ckp sensor o ring seal; instead, lubricate a new ckp sensor o-ring seal with clean engine oil and apply this seal onto ckp sensor while ensuring there is a full seating of the sensor before fastening the bolt to 8 n.m 71 lb in). Connect the ckp sensor the electrical connector, having installed the engine wire harness clip to front cover, after that installing the engine shield and bolts which should be tightened by means of 20 n.m (15 lb ft). Finally, reinstall into the Oil Pan crankshaft balancer and the Water Pump.
