    Q:
How to replace the engine front timing cover on GMC Sierra 1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
You should start your repair of the engine front cover (all versions except RPOs LC9, LH6, LMG, LY2, LY5) by removing the Water Pump after which you should take out the crankshaft balancer. The engine harness electrical connector needs removal from the camshaft position (CMP) sensor wire harness before you take out the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts then the front cover bolts. First remove the front cover along with its gasket while discarding the gasket, then take off the crankshaft front oil seal. To replace the engine front cover you must remove bolts holding the cmp sensor wire harness after disconnecting the wire harness from the cmp sensor before extracting the cmp sensor and actuator magnet with their gaskets and bolts. Replace the crankshaft oil seal and avoid using new front cover gasket during installation unless otherwise directed. Also do not apply sealant in any case. Properly position the front crankshaft oil seal to stop premature wear and leakage. After applying the cmp actuator magnet gasket to the magnet you should install the magnet along with its bolts while torqueing them to 12 nm (106 lb in). Before sensor installation inspect and apply lubrication to the cmp sensor o-ring seal while securing both cmp sensor and its wire harness with torque bolts set to 12 nm (106 lb in). Before installation put a 5 mm (0.20 in) sealant bead at the Oil Pan to engine block junction point. Position the new engine front cover gasket and front cover and tighten bolts on the front cover and Oil Pan-to-front cover connection but avoid over-torquing. After front cover alignment with tool j 41476 apply crankshaft balance bolt hexagonal nut. Reconnect the engine harness electrical connector before installing a new crankshaft front oil seal but perform the following tasks first: snug the crankshaft balancer bolt with the j 41476 tool then tighten the Oil Pan to front cover bolts and engine front cover bolts to 25 nm (18 lb ft).
