2008 GMC Yukon Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Front Crankshaft Seal for RPOs LC9/LMG/LY2/LY5 (4.8L and 5.3L) on 2008 GMC Yukon?
A: The first step for replacing the crankshaft front oil seal of RPOs LC9/LMG/LY2/LY5 (4.8L and 5.3L) requires the removal of the crankshaft balancer. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal from the front cover space. The proper replacement method excludes oil lubrication of the oil seal's sealing area while it mandates the use of a new crankshaft front oil seal. Start the setup process by applying clean oil to the outer part of the new seal and bore of the front cover. The Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (J 41478) assists with proper installation of the oil seal to its guide. To install the oil seal into the cover bore of the crankshaft you must use the J 41478 threaded rod along with its components of nut, washer, guide, and oil seal at the end of the crankshaft. Keep a wrench on the installer bolt hex while using another wrench to twist the installer nut clockwise until the seal fully meets the cover bore. Check the installation quality of the J 41478 by inspecting the oil seal position inside the front cover bore after its removal. Finally, reinstall the crankshaft balancer.
