2009 Chevrolet Equinox Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the water pump (RPO LNJ) (3.4L) on 2009 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: Draining the cooling system until coolant extends below the Water Pump level should be the first step for replacing the Water Pump (RPO LNJ) (3.4L). Use the j 39914 (Serpentine Belt Tensioner Unloader) to rotate the Drive Belt tensioner using the j 39914 (Serpentine Belt Tensioner Unloader) while loosening the Water Pump Pulley bolts so you can release the tension on the Drive Belt and remove it from the right idler pulley. Use the j39914 to relieve tension on the Drive Belt tensioner spring before removing it from the tensioner. Start by removing the bolts that secure the Water Pump Pulley and then the pulley itself before proceeding to remove the Water Pump bolts and the Water Pump with its gasket. Prepare the mating surfaces before adding the new Water Pump Gasket and the Water Pump itself. Secure the Water Pump bolts by applying 10 nm (89 lb in) of torque to each one. Install the Water Pump Pulley before loosely screwing the pulley bolts into place. Begin by properly centering the Drive Belt on all pulleys except the right idler pulley. Then reduce Drive Belt tension by using the j 39914 on the belt tensioner and position the Drive Belt around the right idler pulley . Free the j 39914 tool when ready so the Drive Belt tensioner engages with the Drive Belt before taking the j 39914 from the tensioner component. The Drive Belt needs to be properly centered across all pulleys (1-8) before the Water Pump Pulley bolts are tightened to 25 nm (18 lb ft). Complete the cooling system with fluid while inspecting for leakage issues.
