2009 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Cam Gear on the Camshaft Position Exhaust Actuator on 2009 Chevrolet HHR?
A: The replacement procedure of the camshaft position exhaust actuator starts with camshaft cover and upper Timing Chain Guide bolt removal followed by upper Timing Chain Guide removal. The 24 mm wrench enables clockwise rotation of the camshaft before installing the camshaft actuator retainer part en-48953. Follow the proper procedure to tighten the retainer bolts to 10 nm (89 lb in) while leaving the exhaust camshaft actuator bolts loose but not detached. Before you remove the tensioner please mark down the exhaust and intake camshaft actuators on the Timing Chain. After that you can remove the tensioner under two conditions: the camshaft actuators shouldn't move when performing this step. The Timing Chain retention tool (EN-48749) should be installed onto the exhaust side of the Timing Chain following which technicians should remove both the exhaust camshaft actuator bolt and exhaust camshaft actuator for discard. When installing the Timing Chain Guide the alignment mark on the intake camshaft actuator to the Timing Chain mark before connecting the chain to the exhaust camshaft actuator and positioning the actuator according to the Timing Chain mark. Secure the new exhaust camshaft actuator bolt until proper torque but remove the Timing Chain retention tool (EN-48749), reset the Timing Chain Tensioner, install the camshaft actuator retainer and its bolts before finishing the installation with a torque of 10 nm (89 lb in). A 24 mm wrench should be used to maintain the camshaft position when tightening the new camshaft actuator bolt to 85 nm (63 lb ft) while continuing to turn the bolt an additional 30 degrees using the angle meter (J 45059). You should loosen the tensioner by turning the crankshaft balancer counterclockwise before securing the bolt at 45 nm (33 lb ft). Put en-48953 camshaft actuator retainer aside then add the upper Timing Chain Guide and its bolts with a 10 nm (89 lb in) torque setting before reinstalling the camshaft cover.
