2009 Chevrolet HHR Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2009 Chevrolet HHR?
A: Before starting the replacement of the park/neutral position switch users must engage the parking brake and position both the control assembly into neutral and the transaxle manual shaft to neutral. Start by separating the shift control cable from the transaxle range switch lever before removing the electrical connector from the transaxle range switch, then removing the transaxle range switch lever nut and lever. The next step involves removing both transaxle range switch bolts along with the switch itself. The installation of the old switch requires verifying the transaxle manual shaft is in neutral position before you align the transaxle shift shaft flats with those of the transaxle range switch for switch placement. First attach the j 41545 (Park/Neutral Switch Aligner) then rotate the switch until the tool drops into position after loosely installing the transaxle range switch bolts. After installing the transaxle range switch lever with its nut, tighten both components to 35 nm (26 lb ft) torque value. Check the engine startup rules during switch adjustment to allow start-up only when the vehicle is in park or neutral positions. Adjust the switch until the engine starts in park or neutral only. After connecting the transaxle range switch electrical connector, install the shift control cable to the transaxle range switch lever while checking for correct function. Perform the same preliminary steps on a new switch by placing the transaxle manual shaft in neutral position then align the flat surfaces before screwing down the switch with bolts set to 20 nm (15 lb ft). Install the transaxle range switch lever followed by the nut while tightening to 35 nm (26 lb ft). Proceed by connecting the electrical connector then installing the shift control cable to the transaxle range switch lever before performing the operational check.
