2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Brake Disc Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front brake disc on a 1500 Series on 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe?
A: Before replacing the 1500 series front Brake Disc check the brake master cylinder fluid level and remove excess fluid until you reach the midpoint. Move the vehicle to a level and lift position before taking out the tire and wheel unit. Keep a reference mark if you plan to restore the first Brake Disc. Use two large c-clamps to apply force on the housing of the caliper and press the Brake Pad pistons to their most retracted position. Use mechanic wire to hold up the brake caliper and protect the hydraulic flexible brake hose from damage. Pull out both bracket bolts to take the caliper assembly free and hang it on wire for protection. Take off the retaining push nuts and Brake Disc screw. You can free the disc from the Wheel Hub by placing wheel nuts on studs then hitting the disc area with a deadblow hammer between the wheel nuts. When a disc remains fixed apply cleaning solution then penetrating oil before inserting m10 1.5 bolts into disc threads to evenly tighten them and push the disc free. Before mounting a new disc you must remove all protective coatings from its friction areas through the use of denatured alcohol or equivalent brake cleaner. Use the j-42450-a Wheel Hub resurfacing kit to clean the hub flange surfaces before cleaning the inside diameter of the Brake Disc with the j-41013 rotor resurfacing kit. Clean both surface areas before installation and check the hub flange for damages if you removed the disc by turning jack screws. Put the disc in position and fasten it with the Brake Disc screw that needs 12 nm (106 lb in) torque. In brake system repairs measure the lro of the final assembly to make sure the parts meet quality standards; if needed take corrective actions. Thread clean the caliper mounting bolt openings and use threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) before tightening the bolts to 200 nm (148 lb ft) torque. Put back the tire-wheel assembly before lowering the vehicle. Without starting the engine apply the Brake Pedal to two-thirds without letting go. Apply this technique multiple times until you press the Brake Pedal fully to let the caliper pistons and brake pads lock properly. Complete the reservoir with fresh brake fluid to the required level then apply and seat both brake pads and discs.
