- Q: How to replace the right rear parking brake cable on 2009 GMC Canyon?A: The process begins with performing brake release and vehicle lift before proceeding to change the right rear Parking Brake Cable. First detach the adjusting nut from the park brake before removing the front park brake cable and right park brake cable from the equalizer. The right park brake cable on short wheelbase vehicles should be detached from the left frame rail retainer and the right park brake cable retaining bolt must be removed. During the install of long wheelbase vehicles remove both elements: the right park brake cable from its frame rail retainer and the retaining bolt securing the park brake cable. Proceed to detach the park brake cable from the crossmember before removing the right park brake cable retaining bolts from the right rear frame rail and the retaining nut at the right rear spring bracket while also removing the park brake cable from the retaining bracket. The j 37043 tool helps detaching the park brake cable from the backing plate after you remove the rear brake shoes. Destine the park cable within the backing plate after which install new rear brake shoes and connect the park brake cable to the rear spring retaining bracket while tightening the retaining nut to 80 lb in (9 Nm). Fix the park brake cable retaining bolts to the right rear frame rail by torquing them to 9 nm (80 lb in), after which the cable must be fastened to the crossmember. The left frame rail becomes the installation point for the park brake cable of long wheelbase vehicles requiring a torque of 9 nm (80 lb in). Afterward, the vehicle needs retaining bolts securing the cable at the same torque value. Short wheelbase vehicles should have the park brake cable mounted on the left frame rail then secure the retaining bolt to 9 nm (80 lb in). The last steps involve connecting the park brake cable to the equalizer followed by front park brake cable connection to the equalizer. Then loosely install the adjuster nut and adjust the park brakes before lowering the vehicle.
