- Q: How to replace the alternator on 2010 Cadillac DTS?A: The first step to replace the generator involves disconnecting the vehicle's negative Battery Cable. The procedure requires removal of both the Radiator and the Drive Belt. Prior to generator terminal replacement disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the generator and move the starter solenoid cable protective boot into position at the generator. Begin by removing the generator terminal nut and the starter solenoid cable terminal from the generator followed by the generator bolts and the engine ground cable for generator removal. Follow this installation procedure to position the generator at the engine then install generator bolts that should start tight but will need additional tightening later on: start by installing the bolts sequentially: upper bolt followed by side bolt which is followed by the lower bolt. Then torque them all to 50 nm (37 lb ft). After installing the starter solenoid cable terminal on the generator tighten the generator terminal nut to 12 nm (106 lb in). The starter solenoid cable protective boot needs repositioning while the engine wiring harness electrical connector needs installation to the generator. To finish the operation install the Drive Belt while also connecting the Radiator before you reconnect the negative Battery Cable.
