2010 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake shoes on 2010 Chevrolet HHR?
A: The brake drums need removal before beginning Brake Shoe replacement. The first step requires removal of both the brake adjuster actuator lever spring and brake adjuster actuator lever. Assemble the spring compression tool with a 1/4 inch socket to remove Brake Shoe hold down spring and cup assemblies by compressing the spring and rotating the assembly one quarter turn before taking out both pins of the hold down spring and cup assemblies. Brake Shoe adjuster can be removed by opening the brake shoes slightly at their top section. The drum brake adjusting hardware requires inspection followed by necessary replacement of damaged components. First remove the upper Brake Shoe return spring , switch the primary Brake Shoe direction towards the wheel hub while letting go of its connection with the lower Brake Shoe return spring before taking out the lower Brake Shoe return spring . Check the drum brake hardware after which replace any needed components. You should first compress the park brake cable return spring then free up the park brake cable fitting from the park brake apply lever to access the Brake Shoe. Proceed with installation by wiping all debris from the drum Brake Backing Plate before applying high temperature brake lubricant to contact surfaces. Rolling the park brake cable return spring creates the right tension to attach the park brake cable fitting to the park brake apply lever before placing the Brake Shoe onto the backing plate. After installing both the lower Brake Shoe return spring and the primary Brake Shoe to the backing plate you can attach it to the lower Brake Shoe return spring. After mounting the upper Brake Shoe return spring you should spread brake tops gently before installing the Brake Shoe adjuster. Join the two pins of the hold down spring and cup assembly then place the Brake Shoe hold down spring and cup assemblies by compressing the spring before rotating the assembly 1/4 turn. For closing the system install the brake adjuster actuator lever and its associated brake adjuster actuator lever spring before adjusting the drum brakes and inserting the Brake Drum.
