  • Q: How to replace the engine coolant thermostat housing (LE8, LE9) (2.2L, 2.4L) on 2010 Chevrolet HHR?
    A: To replace the engine coolant Thermostat housing (LE8, LE9) (2.2L, 2.4L), there is a need to drain off the cooling system first. Take out air cleaner assembly and air cleaner bracket nuts and air cleaner bracket. Next, the removal of Exhaust Heat Shield studs and the Exhaust Heat Shield. Drain the coolant from the engine block at the water pump drain and tighten the drain bolt as such. Loose off the vehicle and remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector if equipped with an automatic transaxle or remove the ect sensor electrical connector if equipped with a manual transaxle. The final step, remove the ect sensor, reposition the radiator outlet hose clamp and remove radiator outlet hose. Unravel the heater inlet and outlet hoses from the Thermostat housing pipes. Lift the vehicle up, remove the Thermostat housing bolts, and rotate the water transfer pipe as you pull the pipe towards you to take it out from the water pump. If necessary, you need to disconnect the Thermostat housing and the water transfer pipe, throwing away the o-ring seals if any. Disassemble the Thermostat and the cover with the bolts for Thermostat housing if required. Clean all debris and thread sealant from engine Coolant Temperature Sensor and bolt hole if it is reusing the housing. Replace a new Thermostat housing cover o-ring seal, and if needed replace the Thermostat. Mount the Thermostat housing cover bolts and tighten to 10 nm (89 lb in). Eat food and water seals on Thermostat housing, place with a production of direct part on valvetrain, and loosely situation the production of the valve lantern on and its seals of pistons at it base. Seal with new o-rings and lubricate them with the coolant only before installing the water feed pipe to the Thermostat housing lineing the locator tab and the water pipe to the water pump. Install the water feed o-ring seal with a gentle push inwards toward the water pump; do not make a dent on the o-ring. Place the Thermostat housing against the engine, fit Thermostat housing bolts and tighten to 10 nm (89 lb in). Lower the vehicle and attach heater inlet and heater outlet hoses to Thermostat housing pipes while aligning hose clamps. Put the radiator outlet hose to the thermostatic housing and the position of the radiator outlet hose clamp. If replacing the old sensor, apply a layer of sealant to the threads of the sensor prior to installation of the ect sensor and tighten to 20 nm (15 lb ft). According to the transaxle type, the ect sensor electrical connector should be connected and ho2s electrical connector clip should be attached to the Thermostat housing. Check that the vehicle is level, check the drain valves at the radiator and water pump are closed, add the cooling system. Lower the vehicle, fit the Exhaust Heat Shield and studs, placing the studs on, at 22 nm (16 lb ft) tightening. Install the air cleaner bracket and nuts applying 10 nm (89 lb in) force and subsequently install the air cleaner assembly. Lastly, check repair and look for leaks.
