2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Torsion Bar Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the torsion bar and support assembly (bushing style) on 2010 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: To replace the Torsion Bar and support assembly (bushing style), first, lift the vehicle with hoist and support the frame but not the front suspension. Carefully treat the torsion bars to avoid damaging the coating that can cause the early failure. Mount the j 36202 (Torsion Bar Unloading/Loading Tool) to the adjustment arm and the cross member. Pull up on the adjustment arm until the adjustment bolt and adjuster nut have the load released. Mark the adjustment bolt and measure the turns required for removal. I would remove the adjustment bolt and adjust nut from the crossmember, followed by the removal of the j 36202, which causes the Torsion Bar to unload. Slide the Torsion Bar forward to attach and adjust the arm, remove the Torsion Bar cross member bolt from the weld nut & remove the crossmember from the cross member mount. Remove the Torsion Bar from the crossmember remember that the left and right torsion bars are different and are not interchangeable after that remove the torsion bars from the vehicle. For the installation process, place the Torsion Bar on the lower Control Arm and place it in the cross member at the cross member mount. Install the Torsion Bar crossmember bolt in the weld nut and tighten to 110 nm (81 lb ft). Next, install the adjustment arm in the crossmember then install the adjuster bolt then the adjuster nut. Put the Torsion Bar fully into the adjustment arm and then reinstall the j 36202 to the adjustment arm and crossmember, applying more tension to the adjustment arm while loading on the Torsion Bar. Turn the adjuster bolt the same number of turns you did to take it of before removing the j 36202 from the crossmember. Finally, take off the safety stands and lower the vehicle, and the measurements of z height.
