You should inspect the transmission sealing surface of the halfshaft for corrosion and apply 320 grit cloth cleaning if needed. Cut through the swage ring with a hand grinder so you avoid damaging the tripot housing. You will need side cutters to remove and throw away the large boot retaining clamp which secures the tripot joint. Slide the inboard boot away from the trilobal tripot bushing by separating them from one another. Start by extracting the housing from both tripot joint spider and halfshaft bar before forcibly removing the trilobal tripot bushing from inside the housing. The procedure requires snap ring pliers (J 8059) to expand the spacer rings and while you separate the spider assembly . Follow this step with the spacer ring , next is the spider assembly and after that the second spacer ring before finally removing the inboard boot . Use a wire brush to clean the halfshaft bar before checking the spider assembly for damage or wear. Replace any damaged components found during inspection. To begin assembly fit the new swage ring to the small end of the joint boot before placing it onto the halfshaft bar. Guide the joint boot's small end portion into the groove formation on the halfshaft bar. Mount small swage tool (J 41048) in a vise to position the outboard end of the halfshaft assembly inside the tool with boot neck facing the bottom die. Begin hand-tightening the bolts until they become snug then switch the order of bolt tightening by 180 degrees until both sides reach their lowest position. Slot the spider assembly with both spacer rings onto the halfshaft bar using snap ring pliers (J 8059) until they expand to full depth. Squeeze half of the grease service kit contents into the inboard boot space before distributing remaining grease into the housing. Set the trilobal tripot bushing into the housing before adding the larger new boot retaining clamp to the boot surface. Guide the housing to fit over the spider assembly so that the boot maintains its correct shape. Align all components as you latch together the boot and tripot housing before using earless clamp tool (J 35910) to crimp the boot retaining clamp at 176 nm (130 ft. Lbs.) torque levels achieved by both a breaker bar and torque wrench . Complete tightening of the clamp ear begins when you verify its dimension and proceed until achieving the required measurement.
