- Q: How to replace the wheel axle shaft on Cadillac CTS?A:The procedure of replacing a wheel drive shaft requires users to first lift their vehicle before removing the tire assembly. A drift or punch tool should go inside the brake rotor to stop Wheel Hub and bearing movement. Discard the wheel drive shaft Spindle Nut since its reuse is not allowed and remove it before moving ahead. The drift or punch action should be taken off before proceeding with the removal of the rear knuckle assembly. Use a recommended tool to detach the wheel drive shaft from the rear Differential portion just enough to place the j44394 seal protector (J44394). Place the j44394 over the wheel drive shaft than install it into the Differential output shaft seal before wheel drive shaft removal to protect the seal from damage. Climb into the vehicle to remove the wheel drive shaft keeping the retaining ring on the splined shaft of the cross groove joint unless replacing it with a new one. To install first place the new wheel drive shaft retaining ring and subsequently insert the j44394 into the Differential output shaft seal if this component was removed previously. Insert the wheel drive shaft into the Differential until its splines extend beyond the j44394 while confirming that the retaining ring remains upright. Prevent lubricant leaks by handling the oil seal gently to avoid damage because changing it may be needed. First replace the wheel drive shaft with the retaining ring in position before inserting the wheels drive shaft until the ring becomes engaged. A pull on the inner housing part should exhibit full engagement of the retaining ring. Install the rear knuckle and tighten the new wheel drive shaft Spindle Nut only loosely. Drive a drift or punch through the brake rotor to stop caliper movement and use the new Spindle Nut to reach the Wheel Hub and bearing assembly by pulling down the spindle before tightening it to 160 nm (118 ft. Lbs.). Afterwards install the tire and wheel assembly while checking the Differential lubricant level then lower the vehicle down.
