Cadillac DTS Brake Pad Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the front disc brake pads (J55) on Cadillac DTS?
A: A service technician should check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level before starting front disc Brake Pad replacement on j55 vehicles. A check of the fluid level reveals excessive fluid then drain the fluid until it reaches the midway point between maximum-full and minimum levels. Start by elevating the vehicle and marking the wheel position relative to the axle flanges before disassembly of tires and wheels. Apply a large c-clamp to the brake caliper body until the pistons compress enough to move beyond the brake rotor before removing the clamp. Support the caliper with heavy mechanic wire through its brake caliper pin bolts removal to avoid hydraulic flexible brake hose damage. Push the caliper vertically while keeping the hose connected before applying another large c-clamp using either a worn inner Brake Pad or wood piece to fully push the caliper pistons in. After removing the c-clamp and outdated Brake Pad or wood block you can proceed to take the inboard and outboard brake pads out of the caliper bracket to inspect the retainers. Examine the brake caliper bolt suspension boots for signs of damage which requires replacement while checking the brake caliper pin bolts for corrosion until replacement becomes necessary. Thoroughly inspect the piston boot and replace it if deteriorated. Elite the Brake Pad retainers into the caliper bracket before you drop the caliper down on new brake pads and apply high-temperature silicone lube to front brake caliper pin bolts. Fasten the lower brake caliper pin bolt before securing the caliper pin bolts to 113 n.m (83 lb ft). After reattaching the wheel assembly and lowering the car put away the engine then gently push and release the Brake Pedal until it reaches two-thirds of its usable range. Perform this procedure until the Brake Pedal feels firm enough to correctly align calipers with brake pads. Finish the procedure by adding the correct amount of fluid to the master cylinder reservoir before finally using the proper equipment to smooth the brake pads and rotors.
