Q: How to replace the upper intermediate steering shaft on Cadillac Escalade EXT?
A: To replace the upper intermediate Steering Shaft, firstly, insert the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) into the Steering Column lower access hole. Make sure the wheels of the vehicle are pointed straight forward and the Steering Column is set to lock before unhooking Steering Column or intermediate shaft from steering gear to avoid damage on the sir coil assembly. In order to properly install the bolt and clamp at each end of the upper intermediate shaft and connection of the upper and lower intermediate shafts, mark the relationships between these. Take out the nut and bolt from the lower shaft to upper shaft connection, then nut and bolt from upper shaft to Steering Column connection. Sliding down the intermediate shaft and the connection from the Steering Column and then accelerating the pedal position sensor are removed. Then slide the upper intermediate shaft towards the instrument panel, disengage the lower intermediate shaft and take it out of the vehicle. To install it, insert the lower end of the upper intermediate shaft through the bulkhead to the lower shaft aligning the marks set up it the removal if using the same shaft. Mount the upper end of the upper intermediate shaft to the Steering Column, and affix it with the bolt and nut, tightening the nut to 62 nm (46 ft. Lbs.). Reseal the accelerator pedal position sensor and connect the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft with the bolt and nut, proving the nut at 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Finally, have the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) taken out of the Steering Column lower access hole.
