Chevrolet Astro Parking Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Parking Brake Shoe on Chevrolet Astro?
A: The first step to replace the Parking Brake Shoe begins by lifting the vehicle and placing support under it. Then remove the tire and wheel as the next step. You must first reduce tension on all park brake cables by turning loose the adjuster nut before disengaging the brake actuator lever from the park brake cable. Start by taking out the rotor and use the adjustment screw to reach its maximum position within the notched adjustment nut. Then you should remove the backing plate shoe assembly through steps which include taking out the tips from slot positions and pushing the shoe towards the retaining spring until it disconnects. To remove the assembly from the vehicle pass the open shoe ends over the Axle Shaft. The installation begins by dusting away debris from park brake components using a clean shop cloth and aligning both the adjusting screw slots and tappet slots parallel to the backing plate. The park brake shoe assembly installation happens when the open ends are passed over the Axle Shaft. Place the tappet and actuator open ends outward before guiding the park brake shoe under the retaining spring. The shoe assembly must be checked for its correct position on the backing plate with both tips in the slots before adjusting the park brake shoe while reinstalling the rotor. After attaching the park brake cable to the park brake actuator lever, reinstall the tire and wheel, take out the safety stands, let the vehicle down, before you finalize the park brake cable adjustment.
