Chevrolet Classic Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder on Chevrolet Classic?
A: Start the process to repair or service the ignition lock cylinder by locating the key which matches the five-character code present on the barcode tag that shows lock combination data. Check the functioning of the lock cylinder using the key which you cut to the necessary length for each tumbler position. Key locks excluding ignition lock cylinders along with tumblers may be obtained through the service parts warehouse. Use the Ignition Lock Holding Fixture (J 41340) to construct and program ignition lock cylinders. Note down the lowest tumbler figures for each slot when you align the key and key illustration to find the correct tumbler placement. Place tumblers into their designated positions after removing the side bar and positioning one tumbler spring above each tumbler. First apply lubricant from GM P/N 12346241 Superlube or equivalent to the cylinder tumblers before positioning the spring retainer into its slots at the cylinder end. Push the retainer down fully until it becomes fully seated. Check the installation through key insertion while maintaining the spring retainer positioned along with a side bar inspection to confirm it forms a complete flush with the cylinder diameter. If necessary, disassemble and reassemble. Place the cylinder inside the Ignition Lock Holding Fixture (J 41340) with the spring retainer facing upward and beneath the punch slots before tightening the holding screw. Use the punch from the Ignition Lock Holding Fixture (J 41340) to stake the bezel end of the retainer before repeating the process for the other end by rotating the punch 180 degrees. Check the retainer staking by first loosening the holding screw and then removing the cylinder from the Ignition Lock Holding Fixture (J 41340). Look for correct staking to decide whether additional staking is needed. Insert the retainer spring followed by the retainer into the cylinder retainer slot after applying GM P/N 12345996 grease equivalent to lubricate the cylinder retainer.
