The Wheel Cylinder used in Chevrolet Metro vehicles is a very important component that presses the brake shoes against the brake drum in order to brake. This hydraulic mechanism includes pistons, cup seals, and an expander spring and is enclosed in a cast iron or an aluminum housing. On applying the brake pressure, pistons come out and the shoes press against the drum. The wheel cylinder can suffer from a form of corrosion water in the brake fluids; this which leads to leakage and low braking efficiency. Thus, a proper functioning of the brakes in vehicles require periodical inspection and maintenance. If there is leakage, the wheel cylinder has to be either replaced or refurbished by using a new rebuild kit with the components of cup seals and boots. Replacing a wheel cylinder with the one having a more polished surface and greater corrosion resistance can increase its durability as well as the vehicle's safety on the roadway.

Chevrolet Metro Wheel Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the wheel cylinder on Chevrolet Metro?
    A:
You must remove the shoes before replacing the Wheel Cylinder. Remove all outside debris from both Wheel Cylinder and pipe flare nut before moving on. Prevent fluid leaks from the Brake Backing Plate by only loosening the pipe flare nut. Take out the two bolts plus Wheel Cylinder from the backing plate as you seal the pipe end with the bleeder valve to keep fluid inside. Adhere gm p/n 12346240 (or similar product) to the Wheel Cylinder-backing plate joint before taking the bleeder valve off the pipe. Fit the pipe flare nut onto the Wheel Cylinder by hand and leave it loose. Place the Wheel Cylinder on the backing plate and fasten it with two bolts while you tighten them to 7-11 nm (62-97 inch lbs.) and the pipe nut to 14-18 nm (124 inch lbs. 13 ft. Lbs.). Secure the bleeder valve by turning it to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.) and then put on the bleeder valve cap. After putting back the shoes and drums you should drain the brake system and search for any fluid leaks.
