Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the upper intermediate steering shaft on Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: To remove the upper intermediate Steering Shaft, ensure the vehicle wheels are straight ahead and the Steering Column is in the lock position so that it will not be damaged to the sir coil assembly. Start with putting the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) into the lower access hole of the Steering Column. Mark the relationship of upper intermediate Steering Shaft relative to both the Steering Column and the Steering Shaft coupling. Next, pull out the nut and bolt from the upper intermediate Steering Shaft, then pull out the Steering Column seal and finally nut and bolt from the Steering Column. Prise carefully the upper intermediate Steering Shaft out of the engine room. In installation, if the new Steering Shaft coupling is used, transfer the alignment marks from the old parts to the new part to prevent an off-center wheel. Mount the upper intermediate Steering Shaft from the inside of the engine compartment, then install the Steering Shaft coupling nut and bolt at the Steering Column and tighten it to 62 n.m (46lb ft). Next, install the Steering Column seal, the Steering Shaft coupling nut and bolt at the Steering Shaft coupling and tighten to 50 n.m (37 lb ft). Lastly, turn off the anti-rotation pin(J 42640) from the Steering Column lower access hole.
