Begin the outer wheel drive shaft joint and boot replacement by removing the halfshaft while being cautious near the cv joint outer race with the hand grinder. A hand grinder should be used to slice the swage ring before using side cutters to remove the small boot clamp. Move the boot away from the cv joint outer race down the halfshaft bar then clean all grease from the cv joint face. To access the halfshaft bar retaining snap ring within the inner race use j-8059 (Snap Ring Pliers) to spread open its ear sections. Remove the boot along with the cv joint from the halfshaft bar while discarding the old boot. Gently tap the cv joint cage with a brass drift to rock it so all six chrome alloy balls will come out. Soak the cv joint cage and inner race at 90 degrees alignment with the outer race so they can be lifted out. After cleaning the inner and outer race assemblies, cv joint cage, and chrome alloy balls with cleaning solvent to remove all old grease and contaminants, permit the components to dry before replacing any worn parts. Use a wire brush to clean the halfshaft bar as you remove rust from the area where the seals mount. Before applying recommended grease, examine all parts for damage and wear by brushing a thin coat into the inner race and outer race grooves. First distort the new swage ring into an oval shape and install it over the boot with its retaining ring side pointing at the halfshaft bar. Then put the cv joint on the bar until it locks. Check cv joint engagement by pulling the joint assembly then move the large boot diameter onto the cv joint outer race . The swage ring clamping process requires j-36652-1 (Drive Axle Clamp Swage Tool) for 1500 models but j-36652-2 (Axle Swage Tool) for 2500, 3500, and hummer h2 models. Clamp the base in a vise while aligning the cv joint boot , cv joint assembly , and swage ring . Placing each tool half around the cv joint boot together with assembly insert two bolts starting from opposite sides until the tool halves connect before removing the halfshaft fully to install the wheel drive component.
