GMC C3500 Wheel Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the front wheel bearing and hub on GMC C3500?
A: Before working on the front Wheel Bearing and hub you should elevate the vehicle and set it up with proper safety stands to ensure stability. When replacing the tire and wheel assembly use wire to hold the brake caliper above and beside the wheel. Lift the wheel and drop the retainer/cap before pulling off the cotter pin, nut, and washer. When working with the Wheel Hub/rotor remove it under the condition that the bearing's outer component gets detached without harming the steering knuckle threads. Use a brass drift to push out the inner Wheel Bearing seal then push out the races using the same tool. Clear grease from hub rotor steering knuckle spindle but do not force air through wheel bearings. Wipe the wheel bearings and races with solvent then brush them clean while checking for damage and wear. Replace any broken parts. Assess the driving wheel and rotor for shape and scoring problems before fixing them. Insert the races perfectly into their gap in the hub to prevent damage during the process. Insert the outer bearing race with a wheel stud remover tool (J 9746-02) and proceed with the inner bearing race through the use of a 7.6 cm bar. Use high-temperature front Wheel Bearing grease with separate applications to lubricate both bearings but keep different greases apart. Stuff every Wheel Bearing space entirely with grease using either a cup-type lubricator unit or manual application. Press the inner Wheel Bearing into the hub/rotor while adding more grease then install the new seal making sure the seal sits flat with the hub/rotor edge and lubricates the seal surface. Set the hub/rotor in its proper position before putting on the outer Wheel Bearing to let it press against the hub/rotor's outer race. Apply 16 nm (12 ft. Lbs.) torque to the nut when installing the washer, nut and cotter pin. At the same time turn the hub/rotor assembly by hand. Correctly position wheel bearings when needed and put on the pin and wheel parts. Put back the brake caliper then place the tire and wheel unit before lowering the car.
