The GMC Canyon employs a starter, a precise component that combines electrical energy from the battery to mechanical energy that helps to start the engine. Starting begins when the ignition key is turned to the start position or is resistance started, the starter solenoid is energized by current passing through a heavy gauge wire connected to the battery. The solenoid then energises the starter motor and gears the starter drive with the flywheel / flex plate ring gear thus pulling or 'cranking' the engine. The starter also contains an armature that rotates, field coils or permanent magnets, and gearing mechanism to drive the motor for tackling the loads of the engine. For years, GMC Canyon starters have mainly kept to this electric starter design and have safety mechanism such as a neutral safety switch in automatic transmissions and a clutch switch in manual transmission to ensure that the engine does not start while in gear. - Q: How to replace the starter motor on the LLV/LLR with a 2.9L or 3.7L engine on GMC Canyon?A:To replace the Starter motor on the llv/ llr, with the 2.9l or 3.7l engine, you should remove the Intake Manifold first. Remove the Starter solenoid s terminal nut and lead and disconnect the Starter terminal nut and battery positive cable from the Starter. Next, remove the Starter motor mounting nut and bolt to remove the Starter motor from the engine. For installation, select the Starter motor and place it over the stud by being guided by the caution of the fasteners. Mount the Starter motor nuts and bolts with a torque of 50 nm (37 lb ft). Reconnect the battery positive cable back on the Starter, tighten the Starter terminal nut to 9 nm (80 lb in). Connect the lead to the Starter solenoid and install the Starter solenoid s terminal nut tightening it to 3.5 nm (31 lb in). Lastly, reinstall the Intake Manifold for the corresponding engine.
